HONG KONG — Almost two years into the coronavirus pandemic, Charles and Jenny Chung long for a getaway from their home in Hong Kong. But with overseas travel stymied by the Chinese territory’s strict quarantine requirements, the couple found a different way to relax and recharge: five hours on a public bus.

Sleep Science

The Vicious Cycle of Food and Sleep

The future, my mom used to say, belongs to those who wake up early. L'avenir appartient à ceux qui se lèvent tôt. She'd say this as we drove to early ice skating practices on those cold winter mornings growing up in Quebec. As it turns out, science may be proving her right — though perhaps not in exactly the way she thought.

I am a researcher who specializes in understanding the links between diet, sleep and health. Up until around 2014, my lab focused on examining how too little sleep affects obesity. Our work showed that reducing sleep by about four hours per night, for four nights, led to an increase in eating, amounting to about 300 calories per day (the equivalent of one McDonald's cheeseburger).

Sleep Hacks

A reporter set out on a quest to solve her family's sleep crisis. Here's what she found

No, seriously. I don't think I've slept through the night in four years.

What could be causing my sleep issues, you ask?

I'm the mom of two young boys, ages 2 and 4, and they haven't ever slept through the night except for a few months when they were infants.

This is causing extreme sleep deprivation for my husband and me.

The lack of sleep is affecting every aspect of my life -- including my mood, weight and marriage. My ability to operate on all cylinders is not possible without copious amounts of caffeine.

The company is adding accessibility features meant to help people age in place

Q & A

Our readers are invited to email us with their questions!

Q: Are there any benefits to napping? (Carl N.)

Napping has several health benefits, such as strengthening the immune system, reducing cardiovascular disease risk, enhancing psychomotor skills and boosting work performance. Napping also provides positive mental effects like reducing stress, decreasing the risk of cognitive dysfunction, and increasing memory retention. Among young adults, napping is especially helpful in preserving episodic memories, which is the ability to recall past events.

Scheduling daily naps can also help reduce symptoms in some people who suffer from hypersomnia, insomnia, and other sleep disorders.

Tyler. there are a number of sleep disorders, but a few of the most common include::

Insomnia, a condition in which you have trouble falling or staying asleep.

Circadian rhythm disorder, which stems from and affects the timing of sleep-wake states. It can occur with jet lag, shift work, and irregular sleep-wake rhythm.
