SLEEP STUDIES LOS ANGELES

THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN HOME SLEEP TEST (HST) AND LAB SLEEP TEST (PSG)

For people who snore, have sleep apnea, or any other sleeping problems, it is best to have a consultation with a doctor to discuss home sleep studies. A sleep study is a test designed to help diagnose sleep disorders and issues such as narcolepsy, insomnia, restless leg syndrome, and other abnormal nighttime behaviors.

There are two types of sleep studies:

  • Home sleep tests (HST)

  • “In-Lab” sleep tests (PSG)

The main difference between the two tests is what each test measures and where the test is performed.

I’ve always had a great experience at Snore Experts. Brenda has been very helpful and patient with me. If you have snoring or sleep apnea, they are the place to go!

HOME SLEEP STUDIES (HST)

The home sleep test (HST) is a sleep test that is administered by the patient inside the comfort of their own home. It is usually used to test patients with obstructive sleep apnea. An HST primarily monitors breathing by using sensors to track and measure:

  • Oxygen levels

  • Breathing effort

  • Pauses in breathing

An HST is generally not recommended for patients who have other sleep disorders or who have certain medical conditions such as obstructive heart failure, chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases, and neuromuscular diseases.

This test uses much less equipment, which makes it easier for the patient to complete the test at home. The process is more convenient and comfortable for most patients.

“IN-LAB” SLEEP STUDIES (PSG)

A lab sleeping test, also known as a polysomnogram (PSG), is a test that electronically transmits and records specific physical activities as you sleep. This includes your breathing, brain waves, and your heartbeat. The system also records and monitors the user as they go through different sleep cycles and stages of sleep.

You will be monitored by a technician throughout the night. The PSG can diagnose and test for a whole range of sleep disorders such as periodic limb movement disorders (PLMD), circadian rhythm disorders, breathing disorders, and insomnia among others.

While the home sleep test is taken in the comfort of your own home. The data collected is stored on the machine and uploaded once you go back to the clinic. The in-lab sleep test is done at the clinic, lab, or hospital where you must schedule time to spend a night in their facility.

At Snore Experts we offer the home sleep test to maximize patient comfort, convenience, and deliver the fastest results. Furthermore, our home sleep study can be performed for up to 3 nights to get the most accurate data and allow us to give you the best treatment options. We can also facilitate an “in-lab” study should you choose or need that option.
