Lack of Sleep Increases Unhealthy Abdominal Fat

New research from Mayo Clinic shows that lack of sufficient sleep combined with free access to food increases calorie consumption and consequently fat accumulation, especially unhealthy fat inside the belly.

Findings from a randomized controlled crossover study led by Naima Covassin, Ph.D., a cardiovascular medicine researcher at Mayo Clinic, show that lack of sufficient sleep led to a 9% increase in total abdominal fat area and an 11% increase in abdominal visceral fat, compared to control sleep.

The counterproductive promise of a 'sleep goal'

It's the central question posed by sleep-tracking devices and relaxation apps, and it might seem innocuous and well-intentioned enough. After all, in a world often characterized by busyness and lack of downtime, who wouldn't want to try and sleep better? But the fixation of these devices and apps on goals and achievements betrays how they ironically end up devaluing sleep.

How to Help Teens Get Enough Sleep

The Covid-19 pandemic accelerated a decades-long trend of adolescents getting less sleep. A study of undergraduates at the University of Colorado, Boulder, found that when stay-at-home orders went into effect in March 2020, students’ sleep initially increased by an average of 30 minutes a night. But as the year went on, a combination of anxiety, heavy technology use and spending a lot of time in their bedrooms led to less sleep for many teens. A survey conducted by the nonprofit Challenge Success found that in the fall of 2020, the average 12th-grader was sleeping only 6.4 hours per night.

7 Effective Natural Sleep Aids to Get a Better Night’s Sleep, According to Experts

Fact: a terrible night’s sleep (or an all nighter) can leave you feeling awful the next day. Unfortunately, more than 60 million Americans suffer from poor sleep and over one third of Americans don’t get at least the recommended seven to nine hours of sleep each night. Clearly, the importance of sleep is not spoken about nearly enough, says Melissa Snover, registered nutritionist, and CEO and founder of Nourished.

Q & A

Our readers are invited to email us with their questions!

Q: I often suffer from broken sleep or stressful dreams – how can I stop this? (Lauren M.)

A: Lauren, firstly, I recommend steering clear of stimulants, such as alcohol and caffeine. The consumption of alcohol has continually been linked to poor-quality sleep. It disrupts natural sleep cycles, which leads to nightmares as the body tries to regulate itself against the breaks and wakes you up for a reset. Caffeine is another major contributor to disturbed sleep patterns. Essentially, it hijacks the nervous system, taking up to 10 hours to completely leave the body. Try to avoid caffeine after 2pm.

After a bad dream, you could also try writing it down in a journal. The next day, read it through and slowly unravel it, to see if you can find any reoccurring themes or especially revealing “events”. You may notice that your brain has taken a particularly small detail from your day and created an entire narrative around that, based on your anxieties or fears. This will help to break the nightmare down and work out what may have happened to cause it, allowing you to address those feelings of fear or worry.

Q: I have a hard time going to sleep during the week, but I sleep a lot during the weekend. What can I do to get a more restful sleep throughout the week? (Kyle B.)

A: Kyle, everyone should get 7 to 8 hours of sleep per night to feel rested; otherwise you will feel tired throughout the week. Often, people will try to catch up on sleep over the weekend to repay the "sleep debt" we accumulate over the week. While this can help, one weekend of increased sleep is not enough to repay [it].

One of the keys to good sleep is establishing a routine—make sure you have a wind-down schedule before going to bed. There are many potential treatment options for sleep issues, so ask your doctor and if needed, ask for a referral to see a sleep medicine physician.
