"We Treat the Tough Cases"

Jonathan Greenburg, DDS & Michael Tong, DDS
Exclusively Treating Sleep Apnea, Snoring, and CPAP Intolerance

Wow, it has been 4 months to build out our new Suite but we are finally here. Come in and say Hi. We hope you will like our new office.

It has all the latest technology for the most advanced sleep treatment anywhere, including:

  • A new CBCT unit which shows us your airway, mouth, nose and sinuses in 3 dimensions. If you haven’t seen what this machine can do, plan on being amazed.
  • Digital impressions. Yes, it replaces that gooey stuff we have used forever. And it is more accurate, meaning the appliances should fit even better.
  • And we are now able to provide treatment for Vivos. Vivos is a new and exciting treatment option for Sleep Apnea. If this is something you want to find out more about, call our office.

Thank you for being patient with us. We know we have had issues with our phones and much more. With this growth, we are short staff. (I know this is a common theme.) In fact if you know anyone looking to work in healthcare and is a warm, wonderful and caring person, have them call our office and speak to Veronica. Tell her you heard about it in the Newsletter here.

Again, thank you for your support and especially your patience. From our family to yours, Dr.s Greenburg and Tong.

This Dietary Supplement Can Also Be Used As a Sleep Aid (That Won't Make You Drowsy)

When melatonin and other sleep supplements make you drowsy, GABA might be worth a try.

The average person takes around 10 to 20 minutes to fall asleep at night, but that's not the reality for many individuals who lay awake at night, unable to nod off. Sleep supplements offer a helping hand in falling asleep, but some prescribed sleep aids can cause drowsiness the morning after, as some claim sleep supplements like melatonin make them groggy.

Enter gamma-aminobutyric acid.

Young Adults With Sleep Issues Face Higher Overdose Risk With Benzodiazepines

Using benzodiazepines for sleep disorders was tied to a higher risk for overdose in the 6 months after starting treatment versus other treatments for commonly used treatments, researchers reported.

In a cohort study of over 23,000 young adults (mean age 23), those who newly initiated benzodiazepine treatment had a 44% higher risk of drug overdose at 6 months versus other treatments in an as-treated adjusted analysis (HR 1.44, 95% CI 1.14-1.80), according to Greta A. Bushnell, PhD, of Rutgers Institute for Health in New Brunswick, New Jersey, and colleagues.

Sleep Hacks

These are the daily behaviors an expert in sleep medicine does to get the best night’s rest

Sleep experts have some of the best knowledge about how to prepare for bed and about how to get satisfying sleep through the night. But, what do their own sleep routines look like?

While most people are lucky enough to get three or four nights of great sleep each week, Dr. Richard Schwab says he sleeps well six out of seven nights nearly every week and wakes up energized the next day. Dr. Schwab is a Professor of Medicine and Chief of the Division of Sleep Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine.

I Wore an Apple Watch and Oura Ring to See Which Tracks Sleep Better

I've been sleeping very well over the last week -- and I should know, because I monitored my slumber with two different devices. The Oura Ring Gen 3 and the Apple Watch can each provide a variety of statistics about my sleeping habits, from how long I slept to the amount of time spent in each stage of sleep. The Oura Ring, however, goes a step further by packaging all of those readings into a tidy Sleep Score that feels like the TL;DR version of my sleep report.

Snore Experts Customer Spotlight

Name: Steven S.

Age: 44

Years of snoring: 9

Number of snoring products tried: 3

Experience: When I was diagnosed with severe sleep apnea, I procrastinated for many years and ignored the results of three different sleep tests because I did not want to use a CPAP machine. After realizing how serious my condition was, and feeling exhausted before my day even started, I contacted Dr. Greenburg for help. With his sophisticated equipment he made my sleep apnea appliance. I was excited about wearing it as an alternative to the CPAP. From the very first night I experienced an improvement in my sleeping and even felt rested in the morning. Best of all my wife is finally getting her well deserved sleep! I would never again think of going to sleep without my appliance.

Q & A

Our readers are invited to email us with their questions!

Q: How many times a day are people meant to sleep? (Hope J.)

A: Hope, our bodies are programmed for two natural periods of sleepiness during a 24-hour day, no matter how much sleep we've had in the previous 24 hours.

The primary period is between midnight and 7 a.m., and a second period occurs in the midafternoon, between 1 p.m. and 4 p.m.

Q: How much sleep should my pre-schooler get? (Greg I.)

A: Greg, sleep needs vary from person to person, and they change throughout a person’s lifecycle. Children in preschool need 11 to 13 hours of sleep per night. Newborns sleep up to 18 hours a day, and school-aged children (up to age 12) need 10 to 11 hours. Adolescents need about nine hours of sleep a night, and most adults need seven to nine hours of sleep.
