Falling asleep with the TV on could bring early death: study

Millions of Americans fall asleep each night in front of the TV — but a new study has found the practice could contribute to an early death.

Researchers at the Northwestern University School of Medicine examined the impact of ambient light on the health and sleeping habits of 552 people between the ages of 63 and 84.

The study found that those who slept with even the slightest ambient lighting were more likely to suffer from diabetes, obesity and hypertension.

“People should do their best to avoid or minimize the amount of light they are exposed to during sleep,” the study’s lead researcher, Phyllis Zee, told CNN.

Snore Experts Customer Spotlight

Name: Matt G.

Age: 52

Years of snoring: 8

Number of snoring products tried: 2

Experience: The appliance has completely stopped my snoring, as per my wife. Whenever I fall asleep without it my wife quickly wakes me up and reminds me to put in my appliance. The main thing is that I don’t stop breathing when I sleep anymore. Dr. Greenburg has been great as well as his staff. I did not realize how sleep apnea affects your health until Dr. Greenburg explained it to me. He also informed me that the late football player Reggie White died from sleep apnea. Thanks to everyone in the office.

Q & A

Our readers are invited to email us with their questions!

Q: Why Does My Throat Get Dry at Night? (Chris R.)

A: Chris, a dry throat and mouth could be due to a medical condition like Sjogren’s or a side effect of certain drugs. But dryness that occurs only at night is most likely caused by breathing through your mouth while you sleep. This is often triggered by colds, allergies, or structural problems such as a deviated nasal septum that make nose breathing difficult. Mouth breathing is also more common when you sleep on your back, as noted above, and for individuals who have sleep apnea.

If you often wake up during the night and have to drink water to soothe a dry throat and mouth, talk to your doctor. All these potential underlying causes can be treated.

Q: Does hitting my snooze button give me any extra meaningful sleep? (Sarah P.)

A: Sarah, unfortunately, setting multiple alarms and hitting the snooze button multiple times is generally not recommended. When you’re hitting the snooze button multiple times in the morning, you’re increasing the amount of sleep fragmentation throughout the night. You’re also likely interrupting important sleep stages, particularly REM sleep, which is more common during the second half of the night. Instead of hitting the snooze button, set your alarm for as late as you possibly can. For example, if you need to be at work by 9AM, set your alarm for 7AM and wake up exactly when the alarm comes on – even if you’re groggy – rather than setting up multiple alarms at 6:30, 6:45, and 7.
