I Tried Polyphasic Sleep and Almost Lost My Mind

Messing with your sleep schedule is a dangerous game.

It's 3 a.m. I'm have no idea where I am. The last two hours have been a blank, unknowable darkness.

I hear noises like a medieval battleground. Swords clashing, horses galloping, men screaming. I stagger forward, trying to get my bearings. I'm so confused.

I'm in an apartment; my apartment, I think. Completely dazed, hallucinating. I want to vomit. I look down at my mobile phone: three missed calls, all from my wife, asleep in the bedroom.

I am exhausted. What the hell is going on.

I stumble into the bedroom and wake up my wife.

This Pressure Point For Sleep Is Going Viral On TikTok

One of the most popular subsections of the genre is sleep hacks (the tag #sleephack has nearly 123M views, with related tags racking up views in the multi-millions as well). Previously viral tricks have included keeping your bedroom chilly, sipping chamomile tea, counting your breaths, and eating a banana before bed. Meditation app Simple Habit’s founder, Yunha Kim, is launching a new app today called Sleep Reset to help you improve your sleep. The app aims to bring users the same treatment that you would otherwise receive in sleep clinics — such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I) —to your mobile devices.

Kim said that the idea of the app came to her during the pandemic when, like many others, she began experiencing sleep issues.

Snore Experts Customer Spotlight

Name: Steven S.

Age: 44

Years of snoring: 9

Number of snoring products tried: 3

Experience: When I was diagnosed with severe sleep apnea, I procrastinated for many years and ignored the results of three different sleep tests because I did not want to use a CPAP machine. After realizing how serious my condition was, and feeling exhausted before my day even started, I contacted Dr. Greenburg for help. With his sophisticated equipment he made my sleep apnea appliance. I was excited about wearing it as an alternative to the CPAP. From the very first night I experienced an improvement in my sleeping and even felt rested in the morning. Best of all my wife is finally getting her well deserved sleep! I would never again think of going to sleep without my appliance.

Q & A

Our readers are invited to email us with their questions!

Q: When should I see a doctor about sleep difficulty? (Laura P.)

Laura, if you’ve tried changing your sleep position and environment and are still having trouble sleeping, see your doctor or a sleep specialist.

Contact a physician if you’re experiencing:

  • Drowsiness or difficulty staying awake during the day
  • Frequent acid reflux or heartburn throughout the night
  • Ongoing pain that interrupts sleep
  • Shortness of breath when laying down

With a full evaluation, your doctor can identify whether you have a sleep disorder or other underlying health condition affecting your sleep. There are many treatment options available to help you.

Q: How do you get to sleep fast? (James N.)

James, the answer to this is probably more simple than many people think. First of all, people need to have a consistent bedtime and wake-up time. Your internal circadian rhythm is a clock that runs all the functions in your body (there are actually over 300 of them), and sleep is one of the top. Everyone has a genetically preprogrammed sleep and wake schedule called a chronotype. Once you discover what yours is, and the ‘schedule’ that comes with it, you can get to avoiding things that will disrupt your sleep during the daytime. Unsurprisingly, these include caffeine, alcohol, exercise too close to bed, evening bright light exposure and discussing emotional topics before bed.
