Our readers are invited to email us with their questions! Q: Why do I wake up with a wet patch on my pillow? (Ryan M.) A: Hey Ryan, drooling while sleeping is quite common. It’s not your fault. Saliva can build up in your mouth and, because you’re lying flat, it doesn’t collect at the back of your throat, which would normally trigger a natural swallowing response. That cold, wet spot on your pillow is the result of saliva trickling out of the corner of your mouth. --------------------------------------------------------------- Q: What are the signs that I’m sleeping too much? (Mick S.) A: Mick, more isn’t always better: Regularly sleeping more than nine hours at a time is associated with headaches, back pain, obesity, and type 2 diabetes. These risks may be due to an underlying cause (depression, alcohol abuse, and narcolepsy, for example) rather than oversleeping itself. But either way, it’s worth telling your doctor. |
