Poor sleep may hamper the ability to keep weight off

Over a third of adults in the United States and United Kingdom don’t get enough sleep on a regular basis, due to reasons related to modern life such as stress, the blurring of work-life boundaries, or the excessive use of electronic devices. Previous studies have shown that sleep disorders can cause a variety of health problems, including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, high cholesterol, atherosclerosis, or obesity. Now, a research team led by the University of Copenhagen has also found that lack of good quality sleep undermines people’s attempts to keep weight off after dieting, and that approximately two hours of vigorous exercise per week could help maintain better sleep.

Sleep Science

Natural Sources Of Melatonin To Help You Sleep The Entire Night (Sans Hormones)

Walk down any pharmacy aisle and you'll likely find at least one bottle of high-dose melatonin (3 to 5 milligrams, or even higher) claiming to help promote better sleep (in the U.S. at least, since it's only available as a prescription in most other countries). However, as Ashley Jordan Ferira, Ph.D., RDN explained on an episode of the mindbodygreen podcast, the science behind using melatonin as a nightly sleep supplement is shaky at best—and harmful at worst.

How to sleep: Sugary foods 'are particularly bad at night' - cause 'hunger and wakefulness

OUR DAILY routines and diets can impact sleep and sleep quality. Indeed, experts suggest there are certain foods to include and avoid to get a good night's kip.

Dr Clare Morrison of MedExpress, says sugary foods “are particularly bad at night” as well as being renowned for their unhealthy properties. She said the reason they are bad for sleep is because they cause a sudden but brief rise in blood sugar. The Dr explained: “The consequent spike in insulin then leads to low blood sugar later during the night, causing hunger and wakefulness.”

Q & A

Our readers are invited to email us with their questions!

Q: I suffer from broken sleep or stressful dreams – how can I stop this? (Perry L.)

A: Perry, Steer clear of stimulants, such as alcohol and caffeine. The consumption of alcohol has continually been linked to poor-quality sleep. It disrupts natural sleep cycles, which leads to nightmares as the body tries to regulate itself against the breaks and wakes you up for a reset. Caffeine is another major contributor to disturbed sleep patterns. Essentially, it hijacks the nervous system, taking up to 10 hours to completely leave the body. Try to avoid caffeine after 2pm.

After a bad dream, you could also try writing it down in a journal. The next day, read it through and slowly unravel it, to see if you can find any reoccurring themes or especially revealing “events”. You may notice that your brain has taken a particularly small detail from your day and created an entire narrative around that, based on your anxieties or fears. This will help to break the nightmare down and work out what may have happened to cause it, allowing you to address those feelings of fear or worry.

Q: If I wake up at night does it mean I have a sleep problem? (Laura G.)

A: Laura, historically (before artificial lighting), people would have a longer time in bed which followed the natural cycle of light and dark. Having a couple of hours of wakefulness in the middle of the night was not uncommon. However, people would still achieve a decent eight hours of sleep overnight. In today’s society, we strive to get our sleep in a consolidated block so it can feel problematic when we wake up at night. But it is quite normal to wake a few times overnight, roll over and go back to sleep. If you experience frequent awakenings (three or more per night) or spend long periods of time awake (20+ minutes), it may be time to work on your sleep habits or speak to a health professional about your sleep. Certainly, if you think you have a medical issue that is disrupting your sleep, have a chat with your GP.
