Huge Study Identifies The 'Optimal' Amount of Sleep From Middle Age Onwards

Sleep – a lot like eating food – is one of those things we need to live, but seemingly there are plenty of ways to do it wrong.

A new study has weighed into the debate. Looking at UK Biobank data from almost 500,000 adults, researchers conclude that seven hours of sleep per night is the optimal amount for good mental health, wellbeing and cognitive performance, for people in their late 30s to early 70s.

Sleep apnea correlates with increased traffic accidents for older adults, sleep expert says

A new study out of Washington University shows a correlation between sleep apnea and traffic accidents in older adults. Sleep apnea occurs when breathing is interrupted at least five times an hour during the night, and affects an estimated 30 to 50% of older adults. Since it prevents people from reaching a state of deep sleep, it puts people in chronic states of sleep deprivation, which can lead to risky behavior on the road.

Snore Experts Customer Spotlight

Name: Mark G.

Age: 48

Years of snoring: 4

Number of snoring products tried: 2

Experience: I am a fire captain with a local fire department and the appliance worked out great with the recent wild land fires. Most of the time the sleeping arrangement were not the best, we had to sleep on the sidewalk or on the side of the road of the homes we were protecting. If I would have had one of the traditional sleep apnea machines I would not have electricity to plug the machine into. With the appliance I could take it wherever our assignment was to protect homes. Thanks to everyone.

Q & A

Our readers are invited to email us with their questions!

Q: What is insomnia? (Tony P.)

A: Tony, there are many types of insomnia, but we generally see three types: inability to fall asleep, difficulty staying asleep, and waking up too early. Essentially, if it takes you longer than 30 minutes to fall asleep, or you wake up more than three times a night, for longer than 30 minutes, and this occurs more than three times per week, and lasts longer than three weeks, you probably have acute insomnia, which may be on its way to chronic if unresolved. There are lots of things that can help from sleeping aids to changes to your sleeping habits. If those don’t work, however, and your sleeplessness is bringing you significant distress, it could be worth booking in with your GP for further advice.

Q: Is sleep an ‘offline’ state? (Carl R.)

A: Carl, the traditional view is that when we sleep, we go into ‘rest’ mode. But this is outdated, and we now know that the brain is actually very active during sleep (some parts of the brain are even more active than in wakefulness). Such activity tells us that sleep is playing an important functional role leading to many theories on the roles of sleep. Research has found that, while we sleep, growth hormones are secreted and processed, neural connections are strengthened supporting learning and storage of memories, and harmful proteins are processed and flushed from the brain. Sleep also facilitates the processes necessary for optimizing our immune system and metabolism of food. So together, sleep provides a time for the body and mind to recalibrate and optimize waking function and health.
